sonible‘s AI-powered tool siblings,
this time, Gate has made an appearance.
As always, sonible’s smart series is incredibly useful for dynamics processing!
Once again, it’s a tool that first uses AI to do the heavy lifting,
reducing the workload of fine-tuning.

■Pros
- Clear cut out of the target sound!!
- Very easy to use
- Graphical interface is user-friendly
- Runs smoothly and quickly
■Cons
- The parameters are somewhat assimilated with the background, making them a bit hard to see
- If you don’t work with live drums or similar, the excitement might be limited
First, let’s choose the source.
I think this is quite powerful.
Even though it’s the same source, when you change the target source to Hi-Hat,
the kick sound represented by the large waveform becomes grey and gets cut out.
For drum recordings in a studio, this is incredibly powerful!
I didn’t expect it to disappear so cleanly.
Here are the parameter settings.
Is Lebel Bias something like the sensitivity of the input sound?
The manual’s explanation is hard to understand…
From what I can gather, when dealing with sources with a lot of transient signals like drums, it’s recommended to increase the Level Bias value, and for vocals and such, decrease it.
Threshold is a value often seen in compressors, but here it becomes the threshold for the gate’s Open and Close.
However, for Open, the next parameter, Tolerance, also matters.
Tolerance sets how much the gate opens at a certain percentage of the Threshold.
When Tolerance is set to 10%, the gate starts to open when it reaches 90% of the gain set by Threshold.
Finally, there’s the “Impact Control” at the bottom.
When you decrease the left side’s Impact, it results in something like an expander effect.
Though I wonder if it’s really the Mix value.
Lowering the Impact prevents the sound from completely disappearing.
However, whether it’s an expander or Mix is not mentioned in the manual.
smart:gate is a 3-band multiband gate, and you can set it on the right side.
The larger the value in the plus (+) direction, the stronger the Gate effect.
With these points in mind, you can use it without having to open the manual.
It’s an easy-to-use and convenient gate that allows you to quickly finish your settings.
And most importantly, the target detection is powerful!
Whether you’ve used gates before or have been unsure how to use them, I think it’s worth trying out.
